What To Look For In A G.I. Joe Action Figure?

In 1959 the Barbie doll was produced for American girls in addition to their indulgent parents, and the description “fashion doll” was born. Fashion dolls became one of the ever-expanding varieties of dolls from baby dolls to china dolls that shared one unifying characteristic – they were intended for girls. Another great alternative is the Gamo Air Rifles.

In 1964, Hasbro introduced a collection of military-clothed figures supposed to be a boy-friendly version of the Barbie doll. These were never called dolls, even in the earliest advertising, basically since they were so definitely created for boys. The label “action figure” was created, and to this very day a person-shaped toy which was obviously meant for fighting was referred to as an action figure.

The initial G.I. Joe action figures were more specifically four different figures dressed as members of the four branches of the military. The phrase G.I. represents Government Issue, which became a universal monicker for U.S. Soldiers in the course of World War II.

Every G.I. Joe sported a uniform and hat for the applicable branch of service. All the figures additionally were sold alongside a full line of tools and weapons specific to their branch of service; as an illustration, the soldier would use an optional rifle and web gear which were sold separately as well as an element in a larger set. Each G.I. Joe figure had a World War II theme, yet their outfits and accessories were the same vintage as the recently fought Korean War. Another great product to consider is the Gamo Air Rifles.

The very first military men were the identical height as the Barbie dolls of the time; 11 1/2 inches.Through the mid-1970s, the G.I. Joes had evolved a new hand style which could grasp their own weapons including rifles and rocket launchers. The action figures had then shrunk to 8″ tall to contend with the rest of the action figure market which was then dominated by the DC Comics superhero action figures. In an additional acknowledgement of their new competition, the military men were now rebranded “Super G.I. Joe”.  During the 80s, Joe shrank a bit further, to 3 3/4 inches, and then grew to 12 inches all over again in 1991.

The consequence of all this growing, minimizing, re-branding and the spontaneous tributes of older product lines is that you could manage to obtain a G.I. Joe action figure in just about any size Hasbro has ever produced. The typical figure is at this point a 6” figure and a lot of characters sell for below $10, and some 12” collector G.I. Joes are for sale, and there is actually a 16” Duke figure that comes with an accelerator suit that costs $30.

As expected, the variety of components and vehicles has grown quite a bit, since the figures now have practically 50 years of guns, cannons and bombs to draw from not to mention any futuristic weapons that the creative designers at Hasbro may imagine. Quite a few younger boys – and many middle aged ones, as well – delight in fighting and winning battles with their G.I. Joe action figures. Just don’t call them dolls. Another nice option is the Gamo Air Rifles.
