Why Do Dogs Sleep On Their Backs?
To the amusement of dog owners, dogs would sometimes show some peculiar and amusing behaviors. Dogs, unlike other animals that would simply lie down to sleep, would have to circle the sleeping area before lying down and then would take a curled up position to sleep. Sleeping dogs are at times seen lying on their stomach with the legs stretched out. The flying squirrel sleeping position of the pet would certainly be very entertaining to a family that seems unable to take the eyes off the beloved dog.
Dog owners would certainly be amused if the dog sleeps on its back with the legs up in the air like an upended table. Without a doubt, this sleeping position would be the funniest most especially if the dog is dreaming of running and making pedaling motions with its legs.
Because of an affectionate nature, dogs are considered as man’s best friends because of the strong bond these animals form with their people. These most valued companions consistently aim to please the family thus it would not be unexpected if even when sleeping the dog would still want to entertain its people. A dog that sleeps on its back with the legs up in the air as if waiting for the ceiling to fall down would certainly be a funny sight.
However, this sleeping position does have other meanings. Sleeping on its back can be the dog’s way to keep cool as it exposes the belly that is less covered with fur. A dog finds it rather hard to cool the body as it has very few sweat glands. This is why during hot weather, dogs are seen panting to keep cool. By sleeping on its back the belly that is exposed to colder air would also cool the body.
This rather funny sleeping position is a manifestation of the dog’s affectionate nature. The family cannot resist touching a dog in a funny sleeping position. Sleeping on their back is the most comfortable sleeping position. Dogs would only assume this sleeping position when they feel safe and secure. Dogs don’t feel so secure when they sleep outdoors thus they are not seen sleeping on their back. Dogs that sleep outdoors are all curled up. This way the vital parts of the dog are protected from potential harm that can be caused by the dog’s enemies.
