why is the beach sand shiny at night when moved?

at my beach (panama city beach) at night I go and when I move the sand or dig some it sparkles then disappears. And the closer you go to the water the more sparkles you see.

At many beaches, particularly tropical beaches, there are tiny microorganisms called dinoflagellates that rise to the surface of the sea at night. These microorganisms have an ability called bioluminescence, which just means that they are able to produce light. When the water near them is disturbed, these organisms start glowing. The reason, it seems, is to protect themselves from being eaten. Most of the creatures that eat the dinoflagellates are very small. By emitting light, the dinoflagellates attract even larger creatures that will eat their predators. So the bioluminescence is a defense against predators.

Maybe what you’re seeing on your beach is some of these tiny microorganisms that have been washed onto the sand. Or perhaps it is another species that is bioluminescent.
