Why Orchids Are Considered The Aristocrats Of Flowers

Nowadays, we have a wonderful choice of plants available to us, whether for decorating our homes or brightening up our offices. Further, we never get tired of them; in fact, we seek more of them, wanting to add new ones to our home and work places.

Flowers, especially, have great appeal to most of us, whether they are potted or cut and displayed in a vase. Quite a few of us are drawn particularly the orchid, the aristocrat of flowers.

“Conquerers of the light” is just one of the admiring appelations that have been earned by orchids. They catch us up with their beauty when we first encounter them, and they continue ever after to pull us to them. Nature has shown exceptional kindness to the orchids. Their flowers are admired for being both bright and elegant. The orchid’s odor is sweet, but it is not cloying. Their texture is then, which misleads many into assuming they are delicate. Yet they can last longer after being cut than many another ornamental bloom. Really, the only thing they “lack” from the standpoint of aesthetics is thick foliage. But really, this is no big deal–the common aestehtic solution is to surround them with ferns to create an attractive arrangement.

Many people for years believed that these lovely plants were exceptionally delicate, and therefore hard to grow. This was erroneous. Orchids are in truth fairly simple to cultivate, and more than one hobbyist has raised some breathtaking specimens. The “trick”–and of course it’s not really a trick–is to learn as much as you can about orchid growing before you even acquire your first plant. You need to educate yourself thoroughly first if you want to be successful; otherwise failure is the more likely result.

One prevalent myth about orchids is that in order to thrive, they must have high heat. That’s not true, though! Certainly, we know that orchids have their origins in the tropics. However, a large number of them in their native habitats grow high on mountainsides exposed to cool, crisp air. It would be a mistake to subject these coolness-hardy plants to high temperatures — if the heat didn’t kill them, it would at least stunt their development.

Whether you consider yourself a green thumb or not, you can grow these loveliest of flowers. Imagine surprising someone–a friend, family member, or a lover–with an orchid you yourself grew. Envision yourself cultivating orchids so breathtaking they win prizes. Picture yourself going so far with your orchid growing hobby that it becomes a business, perhaps one big enough to provide you with a living. Yes, all of these things are possible to you as an orchid grower.
