Why is jet fuel so much cheaper than regular (car/truck) fuel?

Jet fuel has always been chepaer than the fuel we pump into our cars and trucks. As recently as a few years ago, the cost of jet fuel was less than $1 a gallon! In the last year it has risen a lot, and is now $2.20 on average in the US as of yesterday. But that is still a lot lower than regular gas prices in the US, which are now averaging $3 a gallon.
Why is this?
Is jet fuel a lower grade or something? (I would have thought jet fuel would actually be a higher grade, since jet engines are certainly more complicated than car engines!)

Actually, jet fuel is more expensive. It is technically diesel, but “Jet A” runs about 3.25 gallon. 100LL (what most planes with reciprocating engines, like cars use) run more like $4 a gallon. This fuel has a much higher octane in it.
