All About Car Seats

Choosing the right child seat can be confusing because of so many options and makers to choose from. Even if you get child seats that are safe, if your car cannot accommodate them, you are placing yourself in a precarious position. Always remember that an ideal seat is one that will fit on your child, fit on your vehicle and is used properly at all times. Based on the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is recommended to keep your baby rear-facing until age one or until the weight and height limits of the rear-facing car seat have been reached. For infants, the rear facing position at the back of the car is the safest for them. This position is universally recommended and even in certain provinces, it is mandatory to place babies in rear-facing positions until they reach one year old and weigh 22 pounds. Normally, child seats can deal with about 22 pounds of weight but makers have now come up with 35 pound capacities for these. If your child doesn’t fit on the child seat anymore before turning one, you better switch to a convertible seat. When it comes to child seats, those that can handle 30 lbs are good enough but some go as high as 45 pounds. If you want to stop using rear facing child seats, convertible ones are really great. If the child is big enough, you can have the child seat face forward if you use the convertible one. Harnesses are necessary if the child seats that you will be using are front facing. Some older car models don’t have a tether anchor so always check if it is installed in your vehicle. A maximum of 80 pounds can be carried by the 3 in 1 child seats. This is a versatile seat since you can rear-face it for a 30-35 pound child below one then forward-face it for babies above one year old and 22 pounds. You get a booster seat after the front facing weight limit is reached. Usually, people would think that the 3 in 1 version is great but children grow up too fast and sooner than later, the booster aspect can be useless if the 40 pound limit is surpassed. In this case, the seats are affected by an expiration date. Usually, you can expect the seats to have a 6 year life span. Considering the weight aspect for child seats, manufacturers are redesigning them to hold more weight. Nowadays, a lot of new style child seats are entering the market making it easier for parents to find the perfect seats for their children. Your child can be 6 years old and still fit into a child seat. When a front facing seat is no longer comfortable, the booster seat should be used. The kid can begin using the seat belt in the vehicle if the booster seat is used. Children are happier when they can see out the window and this is the beauty of boosters. Always use the most suitable child seat for your child’s size, age and weight, and switch to another category once the safety seat doesn’t fit anymore. Manufacturers have user’s manuals for these and they should be followed to a T. Do not compromise the safety of your kid in any way.
