Daniel Boone

Horn in the West

The town of Boone, North Carolina, only about 30 minutes from Sugar Hollow Retreat is a popular tourist attraction to many who are interested in the Appalachian Mountains. While the town is known for its outdoor activities and mountain city atmosphere, Boone is also a strong cultural arts center. The arts in the area reflect the lives and history of the residents of Boone and the surrounding towns.

One of the most interesting and well-known summer attractions in Boone is the play “Horn in the West,” one of the nation’s oldest Revolutionary War dramas. This awe-inspiring play depicts the lives of pioneers who settled in the Blue Ridge Mountains to avoid the tyranny of the British colonialists. The story centers around the family of Dr. Geoffrey Stuart, who is a British loyalist, and flees. Frontiersman Daniel Boone leads Stuart into the mountains. Held in the Daniel Boone Amphitheater, the surrounding natural atmosphere really captures the mood and setting of this time. Written by Dr. Kermit Hunter, the play generally runs from mid-June until mid-August and more information on the play can be found at www.horninthewest.com.

The town of Boone, North Carolina is indeed named after the famous pioneer Daniel Boone, who frequently camped and hunted within today’s city limits. In fact, his nephews Jesse and Jonathan were founders of the town’s first church, Three Forks Baptist which still exists today.

One way to get a true feel of the Appalachian Mountain experience and to see what Daniel Boone so loved about the area would be to spend a week at Sugar Hollow Retreat in Butler, Tennessee. With beautiful natural habitats surrounding the Sugar Hollow lodging sites, many of the sights that forged this area’s identity remain intact from the “Horn in the West” era. Located in the mountains and just a walk away from the Watauga River, an authentic Appalachian experience is easy to obtain. Outdoor activities for all adventurers are available at Sugar Hollow, such as: low-ropes course, fishing, hiking, rock walls, and many more.

Make sure to catch “Horn in the West” this summer and get the full Appalachian experience through Sugar Hollow Retreat. Sugar Hollow reservations can be made by phone at 1-800-957-1776 or through email at info@sugarhollowretreat.com.
