Get Flying With Foil Kites

People have been flying kites for centuries. Since people love to fly kites it’s only natural that they would go the extra step in designing bigger and better kites. One example of this is foil kites.

The parafoil kites are designed to be stunt kites. There are people who are dedicated to flying foil kites to see what kind of tricks they can do. Other people have learned that if they have one of the really big kites they can pull themselves along on skateboards or even surfboards.

But before they got to that point they had to learn to fly foil kites. These kites aren’t set up like the traditional diamond or delta wing kites. Instead of having one string and being controlled by only that string a foil kite has many strings and is controlled by two or 4 harnesses.

The parafoil kites look like they are made up of a series of open sacks that are sewn together. The foil kites have no rigid frame, instead they depend on air pressure to provide the support for them. The strings on the kite all connect to harnesses which then connect to the control line that the flier uses. There can be two control lines or 4, depending on the size of the kite and its purpose.

The first thing to do when getting ready to fly foil kites is to set it up. The kite needs to be laid out on a flat surface and have the control lines attached to it. The wind should be headed into the underside of the kite. Make sure that there are no tangles in any of the lines.

You need to stand with your arms fully extended to your sides and a control harness in each hand. The wind should be at your back and you should be facing your kite. At this point all the kite lines should still be on the ground. Start taking small steps backwards. You want to do this until the lines become taut and come up off the ground. You will notice that any small movement you make will cause the kite to respond.

Take another 2 or 3 steps back. The kite should start inflating. If it isn’t inflating you may have to take a few more steps, or even start to jog backwards, especially if the wind is not very strong. Remember that parafoil kites need to inflate from air pressure to fly. Once the wind grabs the kite and fully inflates it you are ready to go.

Controlling parafoil kites when they are flying is very easy, a quick tug on the right control line sends it right, while the same on the left side makes it go left. There is a learning curve, so don’t be disappointed if you can’t do everything the first time out.

Foil kites are the next evolution in kite flying, and once a person has the hang of it, they are fun to fly.
