Attract more birds to garden?

Hey there I feed the birds in my backyard. I use Wagner’s deluxe blend bird food and usually attract the same birds like sparrows, 1 or 2 cardinals, finches, morning doves and sometimes pigeons. I live in longisland ny closer to the nyc border. I wanted to know if anybody has any tips on attracting more of a different variety of birds. Thanks in advance

do some quick research on their natural diet which will all consist of derivitives from some kind of plant or other. you may find that one plant will attract more than one species. birds also love sheltered cover where they can still see the sky, like dense bush growth or tall canopies. the more native plants you plant, the more birds you will attract. when you eventually establish a preoperly acquainted garden, you may not even need to feed the birds anymore. they will just become natural habitants of your garden and nest there and stay there all year round. I am from australia and currently living on tthe coast. i have built my garden as such that it attracts all the favoiurable insects and blossoms/fruit and nuts/folaige that the local native prefer . the sound of many species of honeyeaters, kingfishers, larks honeyeaters, waxbills and parrots never ends. especially all the chirping hatchlings in the breeding season.
