Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is an exciting, non-contact sport, played by thousands all over the world. It mixes the best features of sports such as soccer, basketball, American football and netball into an elegantly simple, yet fascinating and demanding game. There are Ultimate Frisbee leagues for people of all different fitness levels.

The game is played between two teams of seven players on a large rectangular pitch. A line is drawn across the pitch at either end creates two end zones (similar to American Football). These are the goal scoring areas. A goal is scored when a team completes a pass to a player standing or running into the end zone they are attacking.

Players cannot run with the disc. When you get the disc, you must come to a stop and try to throw it to another player. By passing from player to player, the offense attempts to work the disc up the pitch towards the end zone they are attacking. If the disc hits the ground or is intercepted or knocked down by the other team, then the opposition takes possession. Possession also changes if a receiver is outside the playing area when he or she catches the Frisbee.

The defending team attempts to stop the team with the disc from making progress up the field by marking them (as in soccer and basketball). The theory is that the offense won’t want to pass to a player who is being marked closely, as it is likely to result in an interception. So it boils down to the offensive players trying to get free of their “markers” to receive a pass, while the defense makes every effort to stay with them in hopes of forcing a turnover.

Ultimate Frisbee has caught on like a wildfire at schools, workplaces and neighbourhoods around the world. It has become so popular for a number of reasons, one of the major ones being that you do not have to have a specific skill or ability to play.

In saying so, unfortunately, the pace and excitement of the game can sometimes facilitate injury. Some of the common injuries that people suffer from playing Ultimate Frisbee are:

• Muscle strain or tear, especially in the hamstrings or calf muscles
• Knee strains or sprains
• Ankle   strains or sprains
• Skin abrasions from falling
• Muscle bruising from impact
• Dehydration or stroke depending on weather conditions

If you sustain a strain, sprain, muscle bruising or other injuries while playing Ultimate Frisbee, you should see a physiotherapist for treatment and prevention of future injuries. Your physiotherapist will also be able to recommend a training program for you, including specific exercises, stretching or warm up, to ensure that you are in tip top form in turn decreasing your chances of future injury.
