The discovery and characterization of cathode rays was important in the development of the atomic theory b/c:

2. It indicated that all matter contains alpha particles.

5. It indicated that all matter contained electrons.

Cathode rays always had the same properties, no matter what the material of the cathode. They were made up of some kind of particle. They were affected by magnetic and electric fields the same way that negative charges were. So, they must be made of little negative particles, which were finally named electrons.

So, 5 is the answer.
