How should you figure out if your dog can swim or not?

Just curious. I figured tossing your dog in and seeing if it floats is a terrible idea, so how would you go about it? Don’t worry I have never taken my dogs swimming.

I suggest going wading and encouraging the dog to go with you and then gradually walking into deeper water.

Keep in mind that there are breeds that simply cannot swim, due to their proportions and structure:
Pekingese
Basset Hound
Bulldog
Welsh Corgis
Dachshunds
French Bulldogs

There are probably others, so be careful
