In Japan, what’s the legal age to drink alcohol and drive?

I ask this because by the time I hope to become exchange student, I will be nearly 18. By this age, I will have learnt to drive (in England, you can take a driving test when your 17. Also, you can start drinking alcohol at 18 in England. I know to smoke, you have to be 20. Luckily, I have noplans on starting to smoke Can anybody also tell me when the japanese school year starts? Thats when people go over to become exchange student, right?

Drinking and smoking after 20

Driving after 18 with your driver license necessary
(If you got England license, you must take the international driver license to drive in Japan)

Japanese school year generally starts on April 1.
Re exchange students, some schools start on Sep 1.
There is no strict standard to the exchange student program.
