How do you get a dune buggy engine over the rear axle?

Me and some mates are wanting to build a dune buggy but we cant seem to work out how to get the engine over the rear axle. We are using a V8 engine. Is there a certain type of gear box that should be used or can we use a chain from the gearbox straight to the diff below the gearbox?

First let me mention that this is either a major engineering project or a project that will use existing methods. The engineering approach is not recommended, it is highly unlikely that you could rig something that would work or hold up over time. The fact that you say V-8 tells me that you can forget chain drives or any type of home-made solution that would work in a go-cart size rig.

The usual solution is to settle for either an engine ahead of or behind an existing production trans-axle. The most common solution is VW, Corvair, or Porsche. With the VW liable to self- destruct behind a V-8.

Since this is a very complicated project the best advice I can give you is to a little research. So I have included a few links.

You are going to find that V-8 power may be sexy but it complicates a simple project. And mid or rear engine V-8 power is somewhat rare.
