Damage to hand tendon in little finger?

Hi there, my dad had an accident on the 29th December 2009 with a circular saw which got stuck and came backwards across his little finger and top of his left hand. He went straight to hospital where they operated oh him the next day to reconnect the tendon in the little finger. He has had a splint on and had to keep his arm above his heart really since then. Last week the splint was removed and he now has to do several exercises including rolling play do around to try and strenghten it. The hand is really swollen still despite all of the exercise etc, can anyone recommended something he can do to help it along? Many thanks
