Mary Kom: The Golden Mom of World Boxing

It is unnecessary to remind the readers that India’s performance in sports is not up to the mark but in games like chess, golf, shooting and boxing, some players are doing exceptionally well and the entire credit goes to the Indian female boxer Mary Kom. No Indian had ever imagined in their dream even that an Indian lady would win the world boxing championship but Mary Kom made it possible for five consecutive times after she defeated Romania’s Steluta Duta convincingly in 2010, held at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Barbados. The tremendously talented and dedicated boxer made our nation proud in the world of boxing and brought herself glory with the title Golden Mom. After such remarkable performances we are really hopeful for another gold medal from this genius after the inclusion of women boxing in the upcoming Olympics 2012.

We have witnessed, million players being distracted from their target because of poor family background and financial condition but it is our suggestion that they should take a lesson or two from people like Mary Kom that you may be a bit late but strong determination and hard work will never let you down from achieving the much deserved position.Whatever hospitality and reception she is getting after returning  with glory from  Bridgetown, Barbados, is just the right kind of example because she is no way behind stars like Saina Nehwal or Sania Mirza. Rather she is far ahead. The increasing interest of the media has made her a big star of whom the entire nation is proud of.

This boxing sensation was born on 1st March 1983 at MBC Church in Manipur. After being a matriculate from Adimajati High School, she did her graduation in arts. Initially she was very much interested in athletics. But just like so many people were brought into professional cricket after India won the prudential World Cup in 1983, Mary kom was thrown to professional boxing with a hope to provide bread and butter to her family after Dingko Singh returned from Bangkok (Asian Games) with gold. After being inspired by her parents she took her first step to professional boxing in 2000 and the same year she became the state and national champion.

The biggest ocassion came when she won a bronze medal in the Asian boxing Championship in 2001.But the next year it was not the bronze rather the prestigious gold medal when she defeated Svetlana Miroshnichenko of the Ukraine in her semi-final and Jang Song-Ae of North Korea in the final in the AIBA Championship. Amazingly she got similar kind of results in 2005. 2006, 2008 and 2010 which is not at all a matter of joke, especially after becoming a mother?

For her performance and contribution in the world of boxing she got The Arjuna Award from the Indian Government in 2003 and in 2006, The Padmashree and The Rajeev Gandhi Khela Ratna Award in 2007.

India has never been well known for being a sports dominating country from the beginning but when it comes to producing legends, it has never looked back and the result is some outstanding personalities like Dhyan Chand for hockey, Prakash Padukone, Pullela Gopichand and Saina Nehwal for badminton and Sachin Tendulkar for Cricket, Leander Paes for Tennis and Mary Kom for Boxing . This game Boxing in India in the late 70s was quiet unheard of but in the 21st century national games like Hockey bite the dust but finally indoor games like boxing and badminton ruled all over especially by some young female players. Mary Kom along with Saina Nehwal is the latest sensation and is aptly called the Golden Mom of world Boxing
