Mother Goose Day : Some Useful Tips And Suggestions

Mother Goose Day was idea of Gloria T. Delamar and established on May 1st in 1987.  The idea was to revive old poems, family values and get people reading to children.  It is a great concept and idea that needs further promotion.  Unfortunately many people do not even know it exists, and those they do seem unaware of how to encourage it.  Since it is an education matter, both that it promotes education and people need educating about Mother Goose Day, the schools should take the lead.  Fortunately there are many different ways schools can celebrate Mother Goose Day.

One way is through a library program with having some one dress as Mother Goose and coming in each day and reading the nursery rhymes.  To add more excitement, there could even be puppets or videos shown, or the poems could be read with variations.  Mother Goose variations?  Check out Lord of the Rings, volume 1 when Frodo sings a Hobbit Version of Hey Diddle Diddle.  Then there was a Disney song with Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall and all the Kings horses and all the King’s men had scrambled eggs for breakfast again!  There are also politically correct versions and such.  The children will find these humorous and can then be encouraged to make up there own.

The School could actually get the students to put on skits or plays based upon the Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes.  These can be interactive and fun, there are a lot of Nursery Rhymes and they require little memorization, costumes or even acting skills, yet the children will have great fun, and if done as a night program so will the parents.

Each class can also create a Mother Goose Book for Mother Goose Day.  Assign each student a nursery rhyme and then get them to go home and illustrate it.  The illustration should be posted on a bulletin board, but also copied and made into a book.  tell the children to use as much imagination as possible, adding funny comments and such.  It will be something that parents can treasure, and so will the students years later! Instead of just the librarian dressing the part of Mother Goose, get the teachers and student to dress the part of various persons.  It can be a costume day similar to Halloween! These are just a few of the different ways schools can celebrate Mother Goose Day.
