What Surfing Used To Be

Surfing grew in such great popularity that it became inconceivable for anyone living close to or on the beach to not participate in the sport. The movement was wonderfully portrayed in a couple of movies from the 60s..

All that was needed was a surf board and some passion, for this reason surfing has never really relied on instructors the was other sports do and this is perhaps surfings greatest asset. A surf board, the ability to swim and a beach are all that is required to start surfing. In its history surfing was predominantly a male dominated sport but as times change we are seeing more and more women come up through the ranks in the surfing world. You could also witness a rise in the production of surf clothing.

From the 60s to the 80s it would be very unusual to see many women doing water sports at the beach. In fact in the early days of the sport many men discouraged women from taken part and there are still those that do not like to surf with women even today. But now there are even clothes and surfboards to satisfy women.

Take a look at little Trixie surf boards and Roxy clothing. Many surfing accessories in the sixties (e.g. wetsuits, rash guards and chain) applications was not available for surfers. It was clear that something has to be done about the freezing waters that dedicated surfers had to endure during the coldest winters. Now the surfer, as well as in the case where there is freezing cold water, is able to surf all year round and can be warm at the same time.

Wetsuits, constructed of neoprene, are manufactured in such a way that they hug the body closely when worn. The way wetsuits work is by holding a layer of water close to your skin in the neoprene of the wetsuit your body heats this water and keeps you relatively warm. Recently Neoprene Boots and gloves became available to cover all extremities as well, which keeps your whole body warm.
