Things to Do With the Kids Over the Summer
Summer is the ideal opportunity for having fun while the kids are home for a few months. It can get expensive taking them to amusement parks, even more so if you’re short on cash. If you happen to be in the same predicament as most people are, don’t be concerned, because there are lots of inexpensive things you can do right at home. For kids 10 and younger, these activities are perfect. Many of these suggestions are focused on learning and activity together.
Everyday Items Can Be Included in Your Games
Use everyday items in your play around the house as props for your pretend news stories. A fun thing to do at home is to play hospital. Have the kids gather a stuffed animal or other toy and then use things from around your home that can be used as fake medical tools. Most homes are bursting with oddly-shaped utensils that can be fashioned into medical instruments. You can also do another version of this game by imagining that everyone is a news reporter. A stuffed toy or other toys can be used as part of the crazy stories that you and your child are reporting to the pretend viewers.
Escape to the Wild Outdoors
Something really fun to do is to pretend that you’re on a safari trip in your living room. Gather some large blankets and tie the ends into chairs, the sofa, or whatever stable furniture is handy. Wrap the blankets so that thechildren feel like they are hiding in a canopy forest or in the thick brush where the wild creatures can’t see them.If you own a pair of binoculars, take them out to enhance the game. Have your kids get together all of the stuffed critters and critter figures they can find and arrange them throughout the room, mostly hiding from view, and then use the binoculars to peek on them. Ask the children to call the names of the animals as they find them and then make the sound of that animal. They always have the most laughs with this game!
Get Outside and Have Fun
An budget-friendly, yet really fun thing to do is to get out side for a ride on mountain bikes. If you have smaller children, you can include them in a trailer attachment where they can be seated in a secured cart. For smaller trips, some children might want to use their Razor scooter to get through the ride. To make it even more fun, take your time and suggest animals and things for them to find, like a treasure hunt. Things like birds, flowers, or squirrels can all be great things for everyone to call out as they discover them. This game also works perfectly on a hike and can help kids learn about nature and their environment.
Fun in the Evenings
As night falls, the fun doesn’t have to be finished! Raise a tent in the back of your house along with binoculars for star gazing. If you have a place where you can safely make a fire or a small charcoal barbeque, you can make a campfire out of wood for them. Have the kids find some long sticks for roasting marshmallows. If you have a few days open this summer, go camping at a local lake or beach and extend your time outside! These activities will surely give you and your little ones some much-deserved entertainment, family time, and creativity.
