Tips On Keeping Your Kitchen Safe For Your Little Ones
The kitchen is one of the most used areas in the home daily. It’s a great place for a parent and the kids to bond by preparing and whipping up delicious meals. However, the kitchen too can be a dangerous place for them. All those glassware, knife sets, hot pans and electrical appliances can potentially cause some serious injuries to your little ones.
That’s why it’s important for both you and your kids to learn about come kitchen safety measures. Whether they want to help you out make dishes or simply prepare their own snacks, there are ways to make the kitchen safe for everybody. Read on to learn some things to keep your little ones out of harm’s way while in the kitchen.
Tell your children to steer clear of wearing loose-fitting garments when working in the kitchen. Such can easily catch fire, such as the long, baggy sleeves of a shirt. Instruct them to wear an apron at all times to prevent them from being accidentally spattered with boiling oil or water. Tell them the uses of potholders and mitts, but never let them carry or lift hot trays, saucepans, etc.
Keep all breakable and sharp utensils out of children’s reach. Don’t leave your henckels knife set lying on the countertop as a display. The same is true with all household cleaners. Store these items in high cabinets, accessible only to adults. If they need to be stored in low cabinets or cupboards, use child-safety latches.
Instruct your kids to keep their hands off on certain appliances found in the kitchen. While it may be fine for them to operate the popcorn maker, it’s definitely not okay for them to operate the stove, oven, blender, etc. Better yet, instruct them to ask for an adult’s help when they need something in the kitchen. Praise them for obeying rules, and tell them it’s for their own safety anyway.
Electrical appliances that are not in use should be unplugged. To prevent your kids from being tempted to stick something into electrical outlets, use plastic outlet covers on them. Cords should be neatly placed out of their sight and reach. Imagine what injuries it may cause them should they yank on the cord of a 4 cup coffee maker.
Water, oil and other liquids that spilled on the kitchen floor should be wiped off and cleaned right away. When your kids slip on them, serious injuries may ensue. Make sure there’s a clean, dry mop or rag ready to be used for cleaning spills. Emergency numbers should be placed near the phone. If possible, teach your little ones to contact 911 during emergencies.
