If Kids Are Home, Can They Still Exercise

When the weather is nice, our children do not mind going and playing outside.  What about the breaks during the winter?  How can kids get the physical activity they need?  Physical education is a part of many schools basic curriculum.  Just because the kids are at home does not mean that they can not find ways to get some exercise during their vacations.

One thing that parents can now turn to is video gaming and with the new style of motion gaming that is available on platforms like the Nintendo Wii, the kinect, and the Playstation move, it is possible for kids to get the physical activity they need while they are doing something that they love and if a parent is smart they will get the exercise they need by joining in with their kids.  Using a video game is not a replacement for regular physical activity that all children and adults need although it is at least some movement.  Talking your child into playing a video game is not a very difficult thing for most of us.  A parent should keep a few things in mind about this type of activity.

1.  Think about the software you will buy.  If the title is not fun for your child they will not want to play it.  Companies have a lot of different titles for sale, so a person should be able to find something their child will like.  Do not pick a title unless you are sure that your child will enjoy playing that type of game play.  Games that involve some type of sport usually involve more movement than some others.  Pick the game with your children to find one that gets the movement you want and the enjoyment that they want.

2.  There are different gaming systems available.  The three main motion platforms all have their plusses and minuses and depending on your children’s age and gaming enthusiasm picking the right platform is very important, so do not be swayed by the argument that just because the recent xbox 360 kinect has passed and everybody else has it, you need to get the newest platform too.  It is better to find the one that fits your family.

3.  Choose where you will play the games.  To play motion gaming you need space.  If it is hard to move around while you play, it will not be as effective as you want.  Make sure that you will not damage anything while playing.  It is also okay to use your main television.  That means that you are not watching it while you are playing.  Any way that a person can get their children moving is a good thing. The xbox 360 kinect price is 159.99 US Dollars

4.  Play with your kids.  It is okay to get involved in the games.  There is no age limit to having fun.  The benefits of these platforms is true for older people too.  Everybody benefits from exercise and that includes the parents as well as the kids.  It is also another way to spend time with children.  It is important for a parent to show their kids that there are right ways and wrong ways to play games.  Some kids are very competitive when they play games.  When an adult demonstrates good behavior playing a game, a child will learn how it is supposed to be done.

Today’s video games are an acceptable way for parents to get their kids moving.  There is still a need for traditional physical activity in a kids life.  Make it one part of a total fitness regimen.  When the weather is nice, encourage your children to go outside and play.  But if other things are preventing a child from getting outside, it might be time to turn on the gaming system.
