How do I make a kite from scratch that will fly well and not be easily damaged by the wind?

We used to make these all the time. We used dial rods (about the diameter of a pencil or a bit smaller), twine, and craft paper
(you can use newspaper, if you do just lightly spray paint it and let it dry before using it), and glue.

Take your rods and lay them in the pattern that you want. Use a saw and cut them to length. Then in the ends of the rods cut a small grove to hold the string.

Take the string and tie the sticks together. After everything is secured with the string take your craft paper and cover the frame gluing the ends to secure them. Tie a length of twine to it and add a couple of ribbons for tails and you have a kite.
