New generation toys

Each Christmas that I visit toy shops, I come across new toys and inventions that no one of my generation would have ever imagined in the 80s.

Playing outdoors with my brothers and sisters is one memory that always makes me relax, and brings those nostalgic moments back in my mind.

But was my generation privileged or deprived when it comes to the quality and creativity of our toys compares to that of nowadays?

Modern toys are more based on technology rather than on creativity as they are made to impress, following the latest trends of industrial product design.

Although creativity is questionable, nowadays’ toys can still impress me because of their eccentric design and provocative appearance.

Acquisition costs of today’s toys are quite low compared to those of 20-30 years ago and I cannot recall the times when as a child I couldn’t normally get my dream toy because it was beyond my parents’ budget.

But are all those new outdoor toys really educative and creative, or just cheap to buy?

A blaster toy 20-30 years ago would cost around five times more than today in relative terms and would be of much inferior quality.

As another example, a kite 30 or more years ago would be handmade as a commercial one – if any – would cost a fortune.

In the past decades many games were being created de facto, out of the kids’ necessity to play and express their creativity through some very basic objects that would need a lot of imagination in order to be understood.

What I believe is that although outdoor toys have definitely changed over the past decades, kids emotions playing with them, haven’t.

Some people claim that today’s toys are less engaging and creative because video games and the internet have changed our kids’ needs, thus it is not something to worry about.
