What’s a safer alternative to a candle in a jack-o-lantern?

My kids and I will be carving jack-o-lanterns this year and I’m worried about using a candle, since there will be a lot of little ones around my house this year and I don’t want anyone getting burned or starting a fire.

most places sell little battery powered lights, those chemical light sticks work well and come in different colors, they also last 6 to 8 hours with no batteries.
