How do NASA control rovers/space craft on Planet Mars?

Are they remote controled? like a toy?

As I recall, the mars rovers were remote controlled. It took a long time for simple commands to reach them & it was not the ideal method of controlling the device, but it was the only way possible at this time. I am, of coarse, referring to the one some years ago.
I look forward a day when NASA will again be free of ignorant politicians, 1 president in particular, and be able to send the pros back to the cosmos!
