Who Is The Worst Dressed Politician?

In general, politicians have a lot to worry about; who’s going to vote for them if they’re not in power, who didn’t vote for them if they are in power, and are they delivering on what they promised they would to get into power in the first place. However, like everybody else in the public eye, even their most loyal subjects will scrutinise their dress sense from time to time and, for some unknown reason, politicians get it wrong frequently.

Who is the worst dressed politician in the world today? It’s a difficult question to answer as not only are so many so badly dressed, but there is only a small percentage who regularly hit the streets, and headlines, wearing truly awful outfits. Not least of all Yukio Hatoyama, the Japanese Prime Minister, who was recently papped sporting an 80s inspired multicoloured shirt, with a black polo neck and high-waisted slacks at an official barbeque.

Like many politicians, Yukio Hatoyama’s big mistake was not correctly considering the occasion when he reached in to his wardrobe that morning. Had he been heading to the discotheque he would have been fine, but formal dress codes should always be adhered to. However, following Sarkozy’s lead of just defaulting to a Prada suit doesn’t show style but just a boring lack of imagination. Another familiar face who routinely opts for a trademark suit, white shirt and red tie combo is Boris Johnson. Usually he can get away without a haircut as his suits always look relatively sharp, but even they let him down when he chose to try his hand at tennis. Whilst fully suited. Likewise when Gordon Brown went out to visit troops in Afghanistan, what did he wear? Yes, a black suit, cream shirt and metallic purple tie, of course.

Even when politicians do dress for the occasion, there’s never any guarantee that they’ll necessarily get the details quite right. Take Hilary Clinton for example. The former First Lady almost got her recent speech outfit just right; well tailored, matching accessories and formal, but unfortunately it was bright orange. Maybe she should take some advice from Robert Mugabe. The Secretary General of Zimbabwe has taken to donning shirts emblazoned with pictures of his own smiling face. In an effort to connect with would-be voters, Mugabe apparently believes his light-hearted approach to fashion will warm people’s hearts.

However nobody could say Barack Obama doesn’t put effort into his presidential style. The US President has taken to going tieless at recent dinners and wearing mens shorts during the summer months in an effort to be at ease with his people. Unfortunately the same goes for his jeans, which he apparently favours on the baggy side. Still, he’s not so far been spotted playing golf in a pair of rubber Crocs, like his predecessor.
