Was Nintendo directly involved in Rare’s Nintendo-exclusive titles?
It seems like Rare has not only taken a different route since leaving Nintendo for Microsoft, but is going far below the radar. Some say Nintendo’s choice to let Rare go turned out not to be such a bad decision after all; I think Nintendo may have done a lot more than just fund Rare’s development.
I’d say there are two things involved in this:
1) So far, Rare has only made 2 new titles since leaving Nintendo (unless you want to count Star Fox Adventures, which they worked on for all of about 2 weeks after signing with MS). Both were rushed for the 360 release, and one was a port of a port (Kameo was a Gamecube game, ported to XBox, then ported to 360 before it finally saw the light of day).
2) People tend to greatly underestimate how important the Director and Lead Programmers on a game are to the overall quality of the final product. 4 of the main players in the development of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark left Rare immediately after PD’s release to found a new company (Free Radical) and make the TimeSplitters games.
Nintendo just seemed to see point #2, and MS didn’t expect point #1.
