Original Paint
Can i put primer over the original paint on my truck?
or do i have to sand?
if so is it just the clear coat?
if you plan on repainting the entire vehicle, it’s a good idea to remove most of the original paint from the body panels and fill any gaps or nicks there might be with a body filler. if you fill any body parts, be sure to use a plastic putty applicator or a specially made auto body filler applicator, then wait for it to dry fully, sand it with a medium coarse grit sandpaper (100-300 depending on the density and texture of the dried filler) then apply the primer.
If you are only doing a touch up job on a small area of the body, sand the area with medium fine grit sandpaper(500-800) until the surface is visibly rough then apply the primer.
