5 Travel Essentials that Everyone Overlooks

I've now worked as a travel rep. in the Costa del Sol for over 10 years and I have found that people tend to repeat the same patterns. Every year I meet people who make the same mistakes and forget the same things as those who came before them. There are even people I meet every year who repeatedly forget the same things.

One of the most commonly overlooked holiday requirements is car hire. Many people mistakenly believe that they will be able to get the car that they want when they arrive here in Spain. Demand for hire cars during the peak weeks is very high and many people can find themselves dissatisfied when they can't get the car that they want.

The answer is simple, and it will save you a good few pounds. Its a really good idea to book your car hire before you leave the UK. The further in advance that you can book your car hire the more you are likely to save. You will also stand a far better chance of getting the car that you want. So if you have set your heart on a nice open top car to use while on your holidays don't leave it to chance, book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Another commonly overlooked requirement is the need for travel insurance. Often this hasn't been overlooked but instead of getting a policy that provides adequate cover the holiday-maker may have scrimped on a travel insurance policy that doesn't include essentials like repatriation in the event of injury.

Check the details to be sure that you and your family are properly covered by your travel insurance policy. This is particularly important if you are going to indulge in any potentially dangerous activities like go-karting, parascending or any form of sports. In my time as a rep I have seen far too many people injured on holiday without the insurance cover they need in order to get home. Without insurance the cost of repatriation can be incredibly expensive.

Another item that many people forget is a universal plug that fits the Spanish power outlets. Spanish power outlets supply 220V AC, which is OK for most UK appliances like hair driers and curling tongs. In Spain you need to use an adapter for the power outlets.

The maines voltage in the United States is 120V so you will find that most UK appliances will not work there. Always find out what the voltage is in the country you are travelling to and make certain you get yourself an adapter for Spain.

We all know how important it is to apply sunscreen but every year I see people who forget to apply some before they disembark from the aircraft. I've seen many holiday makers who have spent their first few days on holiday in agony after forgetting to apply adequate sun protection before exposing themselves to the scorching Spanish sun.

And another immensely useful item that is commonly overlooked is a first aid kit. Pack a few first aid essentials including some antiseptic, plasters, bandages, dressings and pain killers. You may also want to pack some anti-malaria tablets, insect repellent and maybe some antihistamine cream for those annoyingly itchy bites.

I really hope that these few suggestions will mean I meet fewer people having problems due to things they have forgotten.
