how to find the friction coefficient?
how can a i find the friction coefficient in a kinetic example.. the data i have is:
t=0.40s
d=0.35m
Vi=0 m/s
Vf= 1.1 m/s
a=2.75 m/s^2
F= 0.36 N
the materials are plastic wheels (the object used was a little toy car, and it had plastic wheels) and wood….
the situation was that the toy car was let to fall down the wood inclined plane…
the angle of the plane is 25º
mass is 0.13 kg
By “friction coefficient,” I assume you mean kinetic coeff. b/c static coeff. is not determinable w/ the set of data you have.
If there’s an angle (“wood inclined plane”) you must measure it, otherwise measure the x and y components of motion, b/c it’s impossible to determine coefficient w/out friction.
But, let’s say angle = theta, a variable
Then:
Net F = ma, m = mass of cart, a = acceleration (constant?)
Friction – mgsin(theta) = ma; g= 9.80 m/s^2
(coefficient) * mgcos(theta) – mgsin(theta) = ma
**mass cancels out, rearranging gives:
(coefficient)* gcos(theta) = a + gsin(theta)
(coefficient) = (a+gsin(theta))/(gcos(theta)
Ok, free body diagram of cart:
gravity going downhill, friction going uphill. Normal force perpendicular to surface of the board/hill. My equation still applies:
coefficient = (2.75 +9.8*sin(25))/(9.8cos(25))
= by calculator…
btw I don’t think you actually need the mass b/c mass cancels out…
