Playground Ball

Ideas for Outdoor Fun

When a child is on a playground they want to play! Whether they are swinging, sliding, or participating in playground fun, they are sure to have a good time. The following are a few fun playground games that can be played by kids of all ages.

Kickball. For this outdoor playground game, you need several people as you will need to form two teams. Kickball is similar to baseball, but instead of hitting a ball with a bat you kick a rubber ball. In order to control the direction of the ball the pitcher rolls the ball on the ground towards the kicker. The person up to the plate must kick the ball, but the fielders can kick or throw the ball. There are three outs, scores are made after running all three bases, and making it back home. You can play a predetermined number of innings, to a predetermined score, or just play until recess is over.

Horse. This is a fun game played with a basketball. First players make shots to determine who will be the starter. The person who makes the most free point shots without missing gets to start. The starter then determines where on the basketball court to shoot from and how the shot is to be made. For example, they may do a layup, granny style, over the back, or however they like. If they make their chosen shot everyone else must try to make the shot the same way. If the other players miss, they are assigned a letter. If the starter misses, the next person has a chance to determine where and how the basket is shot. They choose the spot, etc. and if they miss it goes to the next person, and so on. If they make it, everyone else in the game must shoot from that spot. When it gets back to their turn, they choose a new spot and the game continues. The game goes until everyone has earned the letters to spell H-O-R-S-E. If you are lacking in time, you can play DOG instead. The goal is to make your shots so others have to take the same shot and get letters if they dont make the shot.

Red light, green light. This is a popular game for younger children. The game is lead by the “traffic cop” and everybody else is a “car”.” The traffic cop stands on one side of the court and the rest line up about fifty feet away. When the “traffic cop” faces away from the “cars” and says “green light”, the cars move forward. The cop can flip around and yell red light at any time. At this point all the cars have to freeze. If the traffic cop catches someone moving, the person must go back to the beginning. The first person to arrive at their destination, the traffic cop, wins and becomes the traffic cop for the next round.
