What price do I charge for writing songs for a musical?

I will have to write at least 10 songs for a play that is already written with guidelines for the types and placement of songs.

I think it depends on what instrumentation your scoring it for. If your scoring for a small group, say rhythm section and a couple of horns, I’d charge less than for a chamber orchestra. Either way, I’d charge per hour of your time or at least per minute of music produced.

I’ve done some music contract work, and my advice is not to work for a flat fee if you can help it. If you accept a flat fee you will spend every day doing rewrite after rewrite, and every detail will be nitpicked. If you charged per hour, I’d charge $20 dollars an hour, but I’d bet the producers wouldn’t be able to afford you, ’cause it’s a lot of work. (On the other hand, they won’t send you back to the drawing board too much.) Charging per minute of music is a good compromise.

Also how much you charge would also depend on how much the producers can pay, which you need to balance with how much work it can get you in the future. For example if you think the play might be a hit, or will get you jobs from other producers, I’d take a little less.

I don’t think $50 dollars per minute of music would be too much for a 5 to 7 piece group. So, for example 30 minutes, would be $1500. I know that sounds like a lot but if you start scoring for horns, you could easily spend a full month working on 10 songs. If you have to record all the music, it would just about be a full time job.

I had a friend at UM who approached Alfred Reed (fairly famous composer for wind ensemble) about composing a piece for his music fraternity. His fee (20 years ago…) was $1000 per minute of music! Remember though, this would be for a full wind ensemble, and computers weren’t being extensively used then.
