Puppy Dog

Is it possible to buy a puppy dog 600-800 miles away from your home?
I want to buy a puppy dog (Beagle) and my parents want to get one while we’re visiting a different city because they think it’s cheaper there than here. Is it legal to do that? I going by car. Can you bring the dog to any vet? I might add more details later.
I live in California and I’m leaving today. My family’s busy packing so we don’t have enough time to go to the Humane Society to ask.
It is legal. Dogs are considered property under the law and are not regulated between or within states for sale – you can even buy a puppy in another country, if you want. I would encourage your parents to do their research before you buy any puppy, though. If their sole criteria is “cheaper” then they probably aren’t buying from a reputable breeder that does health or temperament testing? Beagles are cute, but they are a pack-oriented hound with high exercise needs that can be difficult to train for a first-time or inexperienced owner and can NEVER be trusted off of a leash outside of a fenced-in area. You do know that they may bay and howl, right? Have you considered how to correct this behavior or do you live far enough from neighbors that it won’t be a problem? Do you know about the potential health problems in the breed?
PLEASE do more research and think “responsible breeder or rescue” when you finally get a dog. Puppies in pet shops or those sold through internet wholesalers or classified ads are almost always from profit-driven breeders – the kind who don’t health or temperament test their dogs and separate puppies from their mothers before the critical socialization period, causing a lifetime of temperament and other problems. PLEASE don’t encourage such practices by buying one of their puppies!
