A Guide to Choosing a Home Fire Extinguisher
With about half a million fires reported yearly in the United States for residential properties, fire is a potential threat that cannot be ignored. You should have a fire extinguisher installed on each level of your home if you live in a multi-storey house. Position your home fire extinguisher where it is easy to find and easy to grab – you need to be able access your fire extinguisher quickly if a fire rapidly engulfs your home.
Choosing a Home Fire Extinguisher
There are many types of home fire extinguisher to choose from, and it is important to ensure that you have the proper type of fire extinguisher for your home. Fire extinguishers are divided into categories based on the different types of fire, and the different categories of home fire extinguisher are:
- Class A extinguishers are used on fires burning ordinary combustible substances, such as wood, paper, cardboard, and most types of plastic. It can be extremely dangerous to use these fire extinguishers on the wrong types of fire – as they contain water. These extinguishers should never be used to put out a grease fire or an electrical fire, as it will spread the flames and make the fire bigger.
- Class B extinguishers are used on fires burning flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil.
- Class C extinguishers are used on fires burning electrical equipment, such as home appliances, electrical wiring, and circuit breakers. You run the risk of electrocution if you use water to try to extinguish a class C fire.
The rating of a home fire extinguisher is determined by the types of fire it can be used to put out. Water fire extinguishers can only be used on class A fires. Carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguishers are suitable for class B and class C fires. Dry chemical fire extinguishers are suitable to put out class A, B, and C fires, and is the recommended fire extinguisher for most homes.
Using a dry chemical fire extinguisher produces a powder residue which can damage electrical appliances or any computer equipment that you may have. In addition to a dry chemical fire extinguisher, you may want to also get a carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher if you have lots expensive electrical appliances or computer equipment. Using a Carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher does not leave any harmful residue on electrical equipment that may cause damage.
Besides having a fire extinguisher in your home, its also important to have a smoke alarm device to detect the presence of a fire as early as possible. An extra few seconds gained may make all the difference between life and death. You should have at least one smoke alarm device for each floor in your home. If you live in a multi-storey home, its also recommended that you have at least one accessible fire escape ladder on each floor above ground level. A burning fire may cut off your access to the main staircase in your home, and this will leave you in a position whereby you are unable to escape.
