Can I use an ion ray gun to kill fruit flies?

The little buggers have invaded and I need a fun, effective way to kill them. My electric fly swatter is a great weapon, but I want a heavier artillery to destroy many more.

Interesting question. Although ion guns are most effective against droids/androids and possibly cyborgs. I would assume it might actually have an effect on small fragile insects. Particularly those of the Trypetidae or Drosophilidae families.
