Creating More Space In Your Home
One of the easiest mistakes we all make is to have too many things and therefore too much clutter. If it seems like you’re always running out of room and you have more than you need, here are a few tips on learning how to save space and be more organized.
The first step is to get rid of what you don’t need. Throw out old papers and magazines, give clothes you haven’t worn to the Goodwill or thrift shops, or give away unused household items. A good rule of thumb is to remember if you haven’t used it in six months, it’s probably time to get rid of it.
Underneath beds is a great place for storage that’s just waiting to be used. Department stores like Walmart and Target carry storage boxes that can be slid under beds. Say you have an expensive epiphone electric guitar that you don’t want getting ruined. You could easily store it safely in a storage box and slide it away until you’re ready to use it again.
As for closets, look for shoe racks that can be hung over the closet door so you can organize stray shoes and get rid of closet clutter. Sweater cubbies are fabric cubes that can hang on closet rods, and they hold numerous sweaters in order to save space. Try finding a small drawer set, if you have room, that can hold odds and ends.
Furniture or appliances you’re not using can be exchanged for small versions. For instance, you need a space heater. Instead of using a big and bulky heater, try using a more compact brand like the Delonghi space heater. They’re smaller and can be put in a corner.
It’s hard to vacuum around too much clutter, and the more clutter you have, the more dust you’ll have. Dust can cause allergies and other unpleasant ailments. You’ll also be less motivated to vacuum if you have no open space and have to navigate through things. Try using something like the Dyson upright vacuum cleaner. It can be stored easier in a closet than a canister.
As a rule go through your things every few months and see what you do and don’t need. There’s bound to be some things you can part with. You’ll maintain your clutter this way and feel much better once it’s gone from your life. Your home will be more spacious and you’ll find yourself more organized.
