In indoor volleyball, why do only women (not men) run the back slide play?
This is a play in which the hitter (spiker) runs left to right and jumps off of one foot to spike the ball on a backset from the setter.
Women run it all the time, men never do. What’s the deal?
Joe has a great answer above. At the international level, so much is controlled with dominant blocking and great serving that the slide is not very useful for most of the teams. There is a certain style of play that got USA, Brazil, and Italy where they are.
However, at the men’s high school and club level, the slide and other mis – direction plays can be huge, because the blockers have not picked up that sixth sense about where the setter is going. One team that does some nice slide and combination plays is Cuba – look up Leonel Marshall on You Tube and check out his back row attacks – amazing!
