The song’s theme is based off of the book Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It is based on the story of a soldier who’s body was severely damaged after he stepped on a mine during WWI. His body was damaged beyond recognition. His legs and arms were gone and he could not see, speak, or hear. All he knew was pain, yet was kept alive on life support.

Its a song about the 5 Sullivan brothers in WW2, who were all killed while serving on the same ship in the Pacific Theater.
