Spring Swings
Physics Pendulum and Spring Compression questions?
Hi, I have two problems in Physics that I am totally stumped on. I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me how to START one or both; it would be wonderful! Thank you!
1.) A heavy ball swings on a string in a circular arc of radius 1m. The two highest points of the ball’s trajectory are +/- 36degrees from the vertical. P is the lowest point where the string hangs vertically down. Acceleration of gravity= 9.8 m/s^2. What is the ball’s speed at P? Neglect air resistance and friction.
2.) A block with mass M slides on a frictionless horizontal table with initial speed V1. It then compresses a spring with force constant K and is brought to rest. How much is the spring compressed X from it’s natural length?

On the Pendulum, use the equations for kinetic and potential energy.
Using the bottom as a reference 0 m, you know that the 36 angle will give you a height of 1m – 1m*cos(36).
Then e=m*g*h (mass*gravity* height)
Then e=1/2*m*v^2
Solve for v and you have it.
As for the spring, I can’t remember, but it would probably be similar conservation of energy equations. I just can’t think of the equations right now.
