Health And Fitness For American Children

There’s been lots of attention centered on the health and fitness of American children, with many studies citing the rate of obesity in children and adults alike. A growing number of children are watching tv rather than playing outside with friends or on playsets, and some people actually advocate that playing video games is a lot more useful because it enhances dexterity. However, the facts speak for themselves.

According to a recent investigation by Nielsen, on average, kids between the ages of two and five are watching 32 hours of television weekly, which virtually amounts to a full time job. As opposed to thinking creatively, these children are force fed information and ads.

Kids that are in school, ages six to eleven, are viewing 28 hours of television weekly, so that the majority of their leisure time is used in front of the T.V. They spend even more time playing video games and spending time on the web. This is time that should be spent outside playing sports or on play sets.

Children under twelve play video games an average of 2 hours and 23 minutes each week, and even more children are looking up internet sites of a product they saw in a commercial. Also when they’re watching tv, kids are multitasking on the computer simultaneously. Children and teens manage to squeeze 11 hours of media into 7.5 hours.

All of the time spent in front of the television set is leading to kids becoming more overweight since they’re certainly not playing outside or running, playing sports and spending time developing real buddies. The speed of junk food consumption grows drastically any time one sits in front of a T.V., and children are begging for the food they see promoted as opposed to wholesome options.

If you wish to stop this cycle from influencing your family, you will need to persuade your kids to play outside. Whether you do this through play houses or wooden swingsets, by making them head outdoors, you are encouraging them to be productive.

In all fairness, the escalating focus on media will make kids better able to conform to technology shifts down the road. There is however a limit to all things, and so they shouldn’t be spending this much time in front of the tv.

In case you cannot afford to have playsets in your yard, then take them to a public playground where they generally have wooden swing sets and other activities that will get your children active. Kids are creatures of habit, and if you promote a good way of life, they’ll likely will follow. Should you not make this a habit, they’ll likely will live the rest of their lives the way you lived yours. Make sure you are doing the right thing for your children by encouraging a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
