How can I make my bird stop biting?
I have a 11 month old Maroon-Bellied Conure named Carlisle. Carlisle, when he was bought from Petco, was an absolute doll. Stepped up onto my finger, cuddled into shirts and pockets, loved to get his head scratched, etc.
Within the last few months, he has turned into an absolute jerk. He bites the hand that feeds (ahaha) and will grab for your fingers if you put them near the cage. maybe 40% of the time he is a gem. He still does step up onto my finger and will USUALLY transfer pretty easy, but as far as cuddling or petting him, you can rarely do that.
I want my old Carlisle back! How can I correct his bad behavior and reinforce the times he is good?
He takes treats but usually drops them immediately, ahaha. he loves treats in his cage or on a tabletop though- Also, he has a large cage with plenty of toys that he loves to swing from, beat up, chew up, etc. And i try to give him attention, but i dont want to play with him when he bites.

First i wouldn’t give him treats other then for training. When birds activities change they tend to not want attention anymore. For instance, if you stopped for a while bringing him out of the cage and playing with him. He gets use to not being handled. For him to stay friendly you have to show the attention all the time.
I would start from the beginning. Put your hand in the cage and offer him your finger. If he comes out then i would do the finger to finger with him alot so that he gets use to the fingers again.
If he bites, you can go to the hardware store and get a clear tube that just fits over your finger. This way he can still see the finger, but when he bites it wont hurt you. This will teach him that it is useless to bite.
Make sure when you have him out that you talk to him in a low voice. Give him kisses etc. After about a week when he is in his cuddle mood try to touch him. Just continue to do this and he should come back to the old Carlisle. Good Luck
