How to remove rust from an antique tin?

I have a 1913 – 1916 vintage mechanical tin lithograph bank. There are some rust spots that I would like to remove but without damaging the lithography paint. Any suggestions?

Talk to several antiques dealers in your area to see if restoration is recommended. Sometimes an original piece with some condition flaws is worth substantially more than one that looks a lot nicer but is no longer original. If they say restoration is recommended, see if they know experts at restoration. This is not a do-it-yourself project. If done incorrectly, you’ll all but destroy the value.
