Ciudad Del Este – City Or Shopping Mall?

Paraguay is not on the major tourists trail of South America. This might be ascribed to various factors. The fact remains: it is a very interesting country with a lot of things to see and do. If you plan to visit Argentina, Brazil or Uruguay a visit to Paraguay will not cost much extra and be be surprisingly enjoyable.

Many travelers visit the Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil and Paraguay and then bring a quick visit to Ciudad de Este. This is often their one and only encounter with Paraguay.

If you are looking for history and atmosphere, rather go to the capital Asuncion. If you are into shopping though, Ciudad de Este will not disappoint you. This noisy, crowded city is for all intents and purposes a massive shopping mall. If you are a jewelry retails who came here to find a fine jewelry wholesale distributor, you are in luck: there are a number of them in the biggest mall not far from the border post.

Musical instruments of all shapes and sizes are for sale here as well. Whether you are looking for the cheapest imported electric organ from China or a top quality epiphone electric guitar, you are sure to find it in one of the numerous stores. Do not simply pay the price the vendor asks for – do you homework before the time so you know what will be a good price and then haggle until you are happy with the price.

If you’re a family guy, the city caters for you too. Why not buy the wife a nice ring or a beautiful pendant made from Brazilian quarts? There’s a huge number of toy shops, so you are sure to find something for the kids as well. As far as babies go – there are shops selling everything from baby clothes to the latest European trend, the spa type baby bath. There’s also no shortage of shops selling gifts for the friends and family back home.

Ciudad del Este is of course situated on the border with Brazil, so while you are there it’s easy to visit the Itaipu dam. This huge mass of water is the largest hydroelectric scheme in the world. Once you have paid for your tickets, you will first watch a very interesting movie about the history of the dam and how it was constructed.

Afterward you can take a guided tour that actually goes into the dam wall and see the 20 massive turbines, each generating enough electricity to supply a city of 2 million people. If you are lucky, the sluices will be open, which is an amazing sight to see.
